Riddle Answer

The Striking Clock

I woke up one night and heard my clock strike “one.” I was too tired to turn on the light to see what time it was. As I lay there pondering, it occurred to me to speculate how long I would have to lie awake in order to be sure what was the exact time.

My clock strikes the hours and strikes “one” each half hour. I fell asleep before I solved the problem, but can you work out what is the longest time I would have to lie awake after hearing the strike “one,” to be sure of the time?

Riddle Answer

Arthur in Chicago

Arthur lives with his parents in Chicago. Last week, while his parents were out, Arthur’s next-door neighbor Sophie came round to spend the evening. At one point, she popped out to buy some cigarettes. Just then, two men burst into the apartment and, ignoring Arthur, took the TV set, the stereo and a computer.

Arthur had never seen the men before, and they had no legal right to remove the equipment, yet he did nothing to stop them. In fact, he didn’t even act surprised by their behavior. Why not?
